CXMT Confirms LPDDR6 Mass Production; Xiaomi 18 Fold to Debut the Memory in September

ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) said Friday it has begun mass-producing its next-generation LPDDR6 mobile DRAM, with Xiaomi’s upcoming 18 Fold foldable flagship set to become the first commercial device to carry the chips when it launches in September — a move that, according to Chinese state media, makes the Hefei-based memory maker the first in the world to ship LPDDR6 at scale.

The announcement, made via CXMT’s newly opened official Weibo account, marks the first time a Chinese storage-chip vendor has matched the global innovation frontier at the very moment a new JEDEC memory standard reaches commercial readiness. The LPDDR6 specification was published by JEDEC only in July 2025.

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun quickly confirmed the partnership on his own Weibo feed, calling CXMT’s achievement “truly remarkable” and noting that Xiaomi’s self-developed Xring O3 — unveiled on August 24 — is the first mobile system-on-chip to support LPDDR6. “The Xring O3 is the first to support CXMT’s LPDDR6, and the Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the first device to carry it,” Lei wrote.

According to CXMT’s 2026 semi-annual report, the LPDDR6 die delivers a peak transfer rate of 12,800 megabits per second (Mbps), operating at a base rate of 10,667 Mbps when paired with the Xring O3, with a maximum chip capacity of 16 GB. The implementation uses a 1,295-ball package-on-package (PoP) configuration and brings measurable improvements in power efficiency and RAS (reliability, availability, and serviceability) over the outgoing LPDDR5X generation.

The Xring O3 chip was deliberately architected to support LPDDR6 from day one, and CXMT’s product verification was completed in well under a year after the JEDEC standard was published. Industry observers note that the two companies have also established capital ties, giving Xiaomi a priority seat in CXMT’s supply queue — a structural advantage that helps explain how the 18 Fold secured the LPDDR6 debut.

What it means for investors

For the broader market, the significance extends beyond a single phone launch. LPDDR6 is widely viewed as the memory backbone for the next cycle of edge-AI devices — spanning not only smartphones but also PCs, smart cockpit systems, and AI data-center equipment. The Xiaomi 18 Fold is expected to launch in China in September 2026, paired with the Xring O3 SoC and running Xiaomi’s Pengpai OS 4. A second device, the Xiaomi Pad 9 Pro Max, is also anticipated to adopt the same SoC-plus-LPDDR6 combination.
